The silk worm
Several insects exist that produce silk. The most diffused has been the worm silk for 4.000 years. The larva of the silk worm – Bombix Mori – is born from the eggs which open in spring, sheds for three or four times, then spins the cocoon where it undergoes metamorphosis. Then it becomes a chrysalis and then a butterfly. The silk worm produces hundreds meters long thread, several times folded on itself and made rigid by dried silk glue. San Leucio used the silk worms grown by the farmers living in the area of Caserta and Naples and produced between the last week in May and the first two weeks in June. The cocoons were put in places warmed by ovens and stoves where the chrysalis was suffocated and dried. Lastly, the cocoons were selected and cleaned.
