Weaving is the phase of production of the materials
and is made with the loom. The material is obtained weaving the threads,
the weft, with other threads earlier obtained, called warp. The looms
produce smooth materials, with geometrical patterns and complex designs.
The looms of San Leucio are hand looms, partly in the areas of the
Belvedere factory and numerous in the weavers houses. Particular
importance in the history of San Leucio silk manufacture is the Jacquard
loom. It was introduced in 1829 and is considered the forerunner of
automatic machinery based on numerical control. It permits the realization
of complex and refined patterns. The loom is surmounted by a mechanism
for the control of pierced plaques, through which it is possible to
rapidly obtain the design of the material. This loom is functioning
still today in San Leucio, either inside the Belvedere area where
it was restored and put back to work (a cherry-wood loom), and in
the nearby factories where the production method is still the one
used in the past.
