The Restoration

The restoration project of the Belvedere of San Leucio is the result of long and deeply studied analysis which has lasted for several years and which has involved the most representative exponents of architecture, of industrial culture and, in general, of the cultural sphere. In 1984 the Fiat and the Benetton sponsored 5 projects for San Leucio, drawn by world famous architects and scholars. The first feasible project was followed by an executive one in 1985, aimed at restoring the spaces of the area, intended for precise functions useful for the town of Caserta. The basic idea of the project which is still today in the mind of the Administration, is to equip the town with a tourist polyvalent structure able to absorb, at least partially, the attention of the 1 million visitors of the Royal Palace of Caserta every year.
The intervention allowed, first of all, to give back to the building its old appearance, restoring all that was not irremediably destroyed. The restoration of the whole structure in particular started using and recovering the materials which had originally been used to build the structure: tiles, beams, baked tiles, etc. Another attempt was to reproduce also the machinery existing in the silk factory, which are today perfectly working, such as the two big twisting machines and the ancient Jacquard loom.
Today, San Leucio borough and the Belvedere are considered a heritage of mankind, protected by the UNESCO. The constant acknowledgement from the world of the arts, of culture and of institutions for this monument, make it more and more alive and let it look forward into the third millennium rich in happenings and cultural gatherings. That is why the monumental area of the Belvedere is equipped with a congress centre, spaces for fairs and expositions, the courtyards can be used for cultural events and a didactic section is dedicated to the history of the building and silk manufacture, thanks to the support of multimedia techniques.
