San Leucio is a concrete example of the way the Bourbons
built new areas in order to experiment industrial plants based on
industrial autonomy. The policy of reformation, thus, is not only
the consequence of the Law Code, but it is also visible in the town-planning
and the architectural aspect of the borough. It was not inspired
by monarchical absolutism, rather, by the principle of equality.
The town is organized as follows: at the centre there is the Piazza
della Seta (Silk Square) and the 1700 portal which leads to the
silk factory royal building and the suburbs where the workers
live. The towns style is rational and functional. The decorations
are extremely simple. The whole building is based on square and
rectangular geometrical plants, and not on the curvilinear property
of the surrounding natural environment where it was erected. As
a matter of fact, the buildings meet the difference on land levels
of the hills and the gardens are terraced. The dream of an ideal
town with a theatre, a hospital, a cathedral and green spaces ended
at the end of 1700 and the coming of the French Revolution. The
borough is left and, above all, the artisans and the masters who
produce silk are still at work.
