Philipp Hackert
He was a landscape – painter, who arrived in Naples after a long series of European halts. In 1770 he was commissioned by Sir W. Hamilton to document the Vesuvius volcanic activity with his paintings. Subsequently, Ferdinand IV Bourbon charged him of the Realm’s Harbours series, with which a commercial relationship with the royal world started and will last up to the Royal Family departure from Naples. The King was so enthusiast of this artist’s work, that he named him First Painter at Court in 1786.
As far as the Royal Colony of San Leucio is concerned, Hackert painted works inspired by the caustic technique (using colours mixed with wax), with objects taken from Herculaneum excavation site. His classicist taste, his combination of old elements, sum up and, at the same time witness for the trends of ‘700 Naples neoclassic environment. He decorated the big bath-tub of San Leucio Cottage and during his stay in Caserta, he used to live in the Old Royal Palace in Caserta, already Palazzo Acquaviva.
